Family Theme Nights: Mexican Fiesta

Hey there! Happy Thursday! So a few weeks ago we shared how we were starting family theme nights (here). We love them! It's so fun to come up with the theme and then try to make it fun and exciting for the whole family.

We were inspired by Cinco de Mayo, but a fiesta can be fun any time! For our fiesta we made tacos of course :) We had all the fixings. We even had Mexican mandarin soda to try. This time we even had a few decorations and we had piñata poppers (we found the idea here).

Have an idea for family theme night? We want to hear about it! We are always looking for new and fun things to try! xoxo, Britt + Sky

DIY Cacti Wall + Failure

So we had this brilliant plan ...  that's how every good story starts. Right? We were going to cut out foam to make stamps. Then we were going to stamp our back wall in our craft closet.

We think where we went wrong was the size that we wanted our stamps to be. We had decided that we wanted cacti ... Don't ask, we just like them. :) And we wanted them to be large.

So we free handed them on the foam and cut all of our pieces out. We had three cacti, one pot, and two flowers. We decided to start by stamping the post in random places then we would come in later with the cacti and then even later with the flowers.

Let's just say We made a huge mess. The paint didn't go on the wal evenly. When we tried to pull the stamp off the wall our backing peeled right off the foam and left the foam piece still stuck in the paint. It was a disaster.

What we decided to do instead was freehand the pots. We liked the idea of them being hand done and that they would all be slightly different. Then using our already cut out cacti we traced them above the pots. Lastly we came in and free handed little flowers on the tops.

We love how it turned out. It took a little longer than it would have but we had fun in the process. It just goes to show that most of the time, things don't work as planned. But that's ok. xoxo, Britt + Sky

ps: don't mind our mess you can see in the craft closet. you will get a tour later this week!! :)

DIY Gold Polka Dot Cactus Planter

We have developed a new obsession lately. We LOVE cacti! I mostly think it is because it is the only plant that we are able to keep alive :) When I found this cute one I decided that we needed a cute pot to put it in.

Here is what I used:

  • pot/planter
  • cactus
  • rocks
  • dirt
  • gloves
  • spraypaint
  • paint
  • pencil

First, you'll want to spraypaint your planter. We chose white, but you can use any color that works for the area you plan to use it. Once that dries, use a pencil eraser and paint (we used gold acrylic paint that you can purchase at the craft store) to put on your polka dots.

Once all of your paint dries, place several rocks at the bottom of the pot. This helps with drainage. Next add your dirt. Use a glove to remove your cactus from its container and break up the dirt a bit around the roots, and place your in your cactus. Find an area you can put this planter to add a pop of sunshine :) xo, Britt + Sky
